Session & Deacons Meeting Highlights

The Deacons are planning the fall picnic on Sunday October 7; fish plates will be $5.00 adults and $3.00 children

The Deacons have started the preliminary planning for the Kirkin O’ the Tartan Service next spring. Brad Clark is working to secure the Memphis Bagpipers, as well as looking for a guest Scotsman to fill the pulpit.

The Session has called for a Congregational meeting to be held Sunday, September 30 to vote on new officers for 2008.

The Session approved the use of the church for Taylor Phillips’s wedding on June 14, 2008.

In other news during the committee reports, the following activities were discussed:

· Molly Hawkins reported that Zach and the Junior and Senior High Youth are soliciting host and hostess volunteers for Sunday night PYF activities and fellowship at their homes.

· Laurie Monteith reported that Susan Lewis and Michelle Mundroff will be organizing an after school youth choir program for elementary-aged youth.

Brad Clark encouraged other members to attend the upcoming Presbytery meeting in October. He pointed out that our church needs a voice at these meetings, and our delegates need to be involved and heard on the important issues.

The Session wanted to thank the Worship Committee and chairperson, Harriet Beall, for their efforts in scheduling ministers and speakers during August and September.

Bulletin Board Volunteers

A special ‘thank you’ to Pat Hendren and Michelle Mundroff for taking charge of the bulletin board in the Recreation Room. Thanks also to Connie Waldrup for her continued work with the “In the News” bulletin board in the hall.

Mark Your Calendars for These Events

· The next Presbytery meeting will be October 2nd at the First Presbyterian Church in Starkville. Registration begins at 9:00 AM; worship begins at 10:00 AM.

· October 7th at 5:00 PM is the date and time of the BPC Fall Picnic. Fish fry plates will be $5 for adults and $3 for children.

· The 2007 Christmas Cantata, presented by the adult choir, is scheduled for Sunday, December 16th during the 11:00 AM worship service.

Preparing for Pastor Karen's Arrival

As we prepare for her arrival, several people have already volunteered assistance. Thanks to Dot King’s family for letting Pastor Karen stay in Dot’s home the first several weeks after her arrival. Her rental property will not be available until the first part of October; therefore she will be staying at Dot’s home until then.

Michelle Mundroff is organizing a Welcome Wagon package for Pastor Karen. There will be a list posted on the bulletin board if you would like to participate in this ’welcome’ gift. The list includes essentials: cleaning supplies, toiletries, and food staples. These items will be gathered together at the church prior to her moving into her rental property.

Susan Lewis, Bill Mundroff, and Lloyd Campbell have volunteered to freshen up and repaint the Pastor Study. As they complete this project, they will be in need of some miscellaneous donations for the finishing touches. If you would like to help, please contact Susan.

Congregational Meeting 9/30/07

There will be a congregational meeting during the 11:00 worship service on Sunday, September 30th to vote on new officers for 2008.

PYF Hosts Needed

Please contact the church office if you are willing to host PYF (grades 6 through 12 - usually around 15 kids) at your home or in your yard one Sunday evening.

Some ideas include: baseball, badminton, bonfire, hayride, touch football, swimming, simple cookout with fellowship, hotdogs and outdoor games. Anything is appreciated to put a little zip into our PYF!

SNL Bowling Trip

Sunday Night Live will resume this Sun., Sept. 16th with a “Back to School” bowling trip. They will meet at the church at 4:30 P.M. and travel to Oxford Lanes, returning around 7:00 P.M. Please send money for concessions.

Beginning the following week, the normal meeting times for SNL is 4:30 - 6:00 P.M. for ages K - 5th grade. However, 6th graders are welcome to participate at any time!

Introduction of Pastor Karen

Part 2 of 3

This week’s installment will take a look at Pastor Karen’s education and work history. At a high level, she has been working in the Interim Pastor role for over 10 years and was ordained in 1990.

Her formal education includes:

*B.A. in History from University of Delaware

*M.A. in Christian Education from Princeton Theological Seminary

*Masters of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary.

She is currently working on her Doctorate of Ministry at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary.

She has been an Interim Pastor since 1998. Listed below, starting with the most recent, are the churches she has supported and helped through calling of a permanent pastor:

• The Church of the Eternal Hills, Tabernash, CO; it has 307 members.
• Wheat Ridge Presbyterian Church, Wheat Ridge, CO; the church has 220 members.
• Presbyterian Church of Kent, OH, a church of 300, located in the university community
• First Presbyterian Church of Annapolis, Annapolis, MD; the church has 675 members.
• Harmony Presbyterian Church, Phillipsburg, NJ; the church has 250 members.

Pastor Karen’s work history back in the 1980’s and 90’s, includes 15 years at Centenary College, Hackettstown, NJ. She held the following jobs: Counselor, Assistant Dean, Interim Associate Dean, and Adjunct Faculty (Instructor) for Humanities, Religion, and ESL (English as a Second Language). Centenary is a small liberal arts college with 300 daytime students and a large evening extension program. In addition to working at the college, she was the Stated Supply for over 10 years at Beatty Town Presbyterian Church, Beatty Town, NJ, a rural church of 50 plus members.

Prior to that, in the late 1970’s Pastor Karen worked at Princeton Theological Seminary for over 5 years as Assistant Director of Field Education, and for 3 years at The Presbyterian Church of Bound Brook, NJ as Director of Christian Education.

Friends Day at Camp Hopewell 9/30/07

Camp Hopewell invites you to Friends Day on Sunday, September 30th from 3:00 - 8:00 PM. There will be games, facepainting, story telling, arts and crafts, music and food; or you could just enjoy a fall afternoon at Hopewell!

Introduction of Pastor Karen Brostrom O'Brien

Part 1 of 3

Over the next three weeks as we prepare for the arrival of our Interim Pastor, the committee would like for everyone to get to know Pastor Karen better. First of all, when asked, “What is your preferred title or way to be addressed?”, she responded with “Pastor Karen”.

Let’s look over a biography that was included in her application. This is a brief overview; however, it does give us a look into what she is all about.

Who I am: by Pastor Karen

I am a life long Presbyterian. I grew up in a very historic church in Bergenfield, New Jersey. My father’s ancestors arrived in that community early in our country’s history. For generations our family was associated with South Presbyterian Church, Bergenfield. The church was important to me in my early years. Later my experience at Johnsonburg, a Presbyterian camp, helped me on my faith journey.

A sense of call to work in the church came to me at an early age. I was fascinated with family and friends who were able to talk about issues surrounding faith and personal beliefs. I learned to discuss doubts openly and was taught to pray about concerns. Friends, music, and church got me through adolescence and young adulthood.

When I went to college, I attended Head of Christiana Presbyterian Church in Newark, Delaware. My mother’s family was connected to this church. The members were outgoing and gracious. I sang in the choir one year. This church helped me grow and understand the connectional system of the Presbyterian Church. The sermons were different from home but it was here in Newark that I started to listen attentively to sermons and begin to understand the movement of the worship service.

When I arrived at seminary after college, I knew I was in the right place.

I have a strong interest in growth and support of leaders in the church and candidates for ministry and church vocations.

My family consists of my son, David, a newspaper staff reporter in Kent, Ohio. My parents and my two sisters (and their families) live in New Jersey. My brother and his family live in Colorado.

Next week’s newsletter will include more detailed information about her lifelong dedication for doing the work of God and that of the church. This will include the many places she has lived, and her career highlights that take her from Director of Christian Education through her last ten years as an Interim Pastor.

A Note From Sally Nickle

Dear Church Friends,
As some of you may know, Canice and I have moved to Lakeland, TN. I took a transfer with my employer and am working at the Memphis Jewish Nursing Home, one of the nicest.

My move was so sudden, and my decision so inspired; but I was nevertheless grief-stricken to be leaving Batesville, my house and our sweet Batesville Presbyterian Church. I did not get to say many goodbyes.

Batesville Presbyterian gave Canice the best "start" in a church that she could have gotten. I am forever grateful to Ms. Janey and all of the awesome teachers and volunteers who nurtured her and taught her for the past 10 years!

We are visiting churches here and are homesick for all of your smiles there! Canice is getting used to her new school, as it is a 9-4 o'clock school. We would ask for your prayers as we go through this transition process, and I will return the prayer for you all to secure "God's choice" in a minister for BPC - ASAP!

Seth Still, Guest Speaker 9/2/07

Seth is a native of Senatobia and a graduate of Mississippi State University. He now resides in Jackson with his wife Julie and his 12-week old son, John Everette. He is in his senior year at Reformed Theological Seminary where he is completing his Master of Divinity Degree.

A Challenge to the Morning and Afternoon Circles

The fall season is approaching and September is the month PW Circles begin their monthly meetings. The 2007-2008 study book, Above and Beyond: Hearing God’s Call in Jonah and Ruth, will be used by the Morning and Afternoon Circles.

The title of Lesson One is Reading Jonah and Ruth For All They’re Worth. Most of us wouldn’t think of studying the books of Jonah and Ruth together; at first glance, they may seem like an “odd couple.”

Before your Circle meets in September, you are challenged to read the books of Jonah and Ruth (both are very short).

As we study these books, we will discover three common themes:

· Both bear witness to a God whose love will not let us go.

· Both suggest that God’s mind may be broader than our own,

· Both call us to a deeper commitment of faith.

This study invites us to listen for God’s call - may we all hear and say “yes” to the call!

Interim Pastor Coming September 23, 2007

It is with great pleasure that the Interim Pastor Committee informs everyone of the exciting news. Last Sunday, the Session approved the terms of a contract between Karen Brostrom-O’Brien and Batesville Presbyterian Church. Her first Sunday in the pulpit will be September 23, 2007.

Prior to her arrival, we will continue to utilize the newsletter to begin introducing her. To start with, the committee would like to share portions of a letter we wrote inviting Karen to come visit our Church.

Excerpts from a letter to Karen from the search committee: “As we reflected back on your interview, we were struck by our internal feelings. Our conversation with you warmed our hearts; your sermon struck a cord with us as if it was music to our ears; your humor lightened our loads, and your overall presence, along with the Lord’s, energized our minds and bodies.” “God has great plans for both you and our Church family.”

We continued, saying, “We could envision God’s plans for you: to labor with us; to comfort us in our times of sorrow; to help us grow faithfully; to challenge us as we travel along our faith journey, and to be with us in our times of celebration helping putting the exclamation mark on them.”

These thoughts just seem to summarize Karen’s warm and caring personality. As she arrives, we hope everyone will take the time to get to know her better and come to appreciate her many outstanding qualities.

Finally, as time draws closer, the committee hopes everyone will find the time and energy to help, as we all prepare for her arrival, as well as during her time of transition and settling into the Batesville Community. We will keep everyone informed about the opportunities to get involved and ways to show her our Christian and southern hospitality.

Thoughts on Prayer

Every church is in need of prayer, and especially ours during this transition time. We really want our prayers to reach God. There are many Bible verses that teach us how to be an effective prayer warrior. The verse I want to quote here is James 5:16. "The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much."

According to this verse, I must be righteous if my prayer is to have much of an effect. So I need to know if I am righteous. Does being righteous mean I must never have sinned, never have said anything bad, or have done good deeds constantly? No. It means I've accepted Jesus into my heart and asked Him to be my righteousness. (See Corinthians 5:21). Because of Jesus's fantastic love for me, He gave His life for me. I am righteous if I believe Jesus is my Savior. Then I can pray effectively and fervently.

My testimony is that prayer has made all the difference in the world in my life. I had a mother who prayed for me all her life, and I now miss her prayers. So I encourage all parents and grandparents to pray regularly for your children. It will make a difference. God cares that we talk to Him regularly. Not only in asking, but in expressing our cares and concerns to Him, and to thank and praise Him. God has a way of comforting us, of giving peace, and often giving a solution to a specific problem. Through prayer, I have found God to be a wonderful, caring God who loves even me.

I like this quote by Dr. Norman Vincent Peale: "Prayer doesn't always change things for you, but it always changes you for things." Think on that.

Someone else said, "Prayer is getting you ready to do God's will."

I challenge us all at Batesville Presbyterian Church to pray effectively and fervently and daily for our church, for ourselves, for all who are in our circle of influences, for our world. It will make a difference. The Bible says it will "avail much."

PW Bible Study Overview

As September rolls around, Presbyterian Women are making preparations to begin the 2007-2008 Bible study. The Morning and Afternoon Circles are studying the book, Above and Beyond: Hearing God’s Call in Jonah and Ruth.

Two things Jonah and Ruth have to teach is that God’s steadfast love goes above and beyond anything we’ve ever imagined. Secondly, that God’s love calls us to respond and leaves no corner of our lives untouched. What does it really mean to, “hear God’s call?” I’m sure we all have heard this phrase, but we often apply it only to those who go into full-time ministry. In this Bible study, we will be looking at a much broader description of what it means to hear God’s call.

Perhaps you have been a Christian for a while and are wondering whether there is more to it than you are currently experiencing. Your call may come as you discover new ways God wants to work in and through you. For the deeply committed Christian, the call may be to go “further up and further in” studying God’s Word.

Sometimes we assume that gender makes a difference in how or whether we are called. For some reason in the past years, God’s call was reserved for the male population of our society. I’ve heard it said many times, “In Scripture, the vast majority of calls are for men.” But as I have studied the Bible, I’ve learned that the Bible is full of women who are called in quite specific ways. Some examples are: Deborah was a prophet and a judge (Judges 4:4); Miriam was a prophet (Exodus 15:20); Phoebe was a deacon (Romans 16:1).

It is true that Jonah received a more traditional call, in that he was called to be a prophet. However, both Jonah and Ruth received a call in the more general sense. Each Christian has a call! This means there is something specific that God has for you, a Christian, to say or do.

Having become a Christian through faith in Jesus Christ and giving your life to God, each Christian must continue to listen for God’s call throughout his or her life. Each Christian must continue to ask, “What am I called to say?” “What am I called to do?” “What am I called to be?” I firmly believe that each Christian has a specific call to do something in God’s Kingdom as long as He gives us life. Trusting God to faithfully provide what is needed to fulfill the call. Will you hear God’s call and answer it with a yes?

During these times without a pastor, will you answer the call to:

· Pray daily for our session and congregational leadership

· Be faithful in attendance and giving

· Encourage the Search Committee as God’s person to fill our pulpit is located.

· Radiate God’s love with a smile.

PYF News and Meeting Time Correction

PYF is invited to a swimming party and supper at the home of Buddy and Sara Dell Gray this Sunday, August 26th from 4:45 to 7:15 P.M.

Correcting an error in last week's newsletter, the new time of 6:00 P.M. for PYF meetings is for “Wednesday” nights. The meeting time for Sunday evenings will remain at 5:00 P.M.

Why an Interim Pastor?

When the Session was initially informed of Jon’s leaving, our first conversation centered around how quickly could the Church get a permanent Pastor called. During that same time, Dr. Greg Goodwiller, Presbytery Executor helped guide us through the recommended process which includes an Interim Pastor. Thus the Interim Committee was formed. As the committee went into much deeper thought and discussion, it became much clearer to us the wisdom behind this important and necessary part of the process.

As one thinks about the purpose of an Interim, it is analogous to the purpose of winter. I am sure many of us would just assume go from fall to spring and skip winter. Yet one must look at the underlying importance of this season. In many ways winter and the Interim Pastor serves the same purpose:

· They both kill off the weeds or bad habits, which, in turn, allow the gardener or congregation to see the landscape much clearer.

· They both allow the gardener or congregation to see the real potential and create a grand vision for their future.

· They both provide the water and nutrients required for re-energizing and rebirth.

· They both bring about a hope and great expectations for the upcoming season.

They both harden and mature the life within, allowing its internal strengths to be revealed and exploited.

As the committee has been deeply engaged in the Interim process, it is much easier for us to recognize the importance of the changing seasons. We have also realized that allowing the Interim Pastor the time required to perform these very important tasks is not only in the membership’s best interest, but short-cutting this process might be detrimental in the long run. As we enter into the phase of an Interim calling, the church must be patient and recognize its importance. The church must trust the process and its critical role in preparing us for the calling of our next permanent Pastor.

Congregational Meeting August 26, 2007

There will be a congregational meeting next Sunday morning, August 26th at the 11:00 worship service to elect members to the Officers Nominating Committee.

PYF Time Change

Effective August 15th, PYF will begin meeting at 6:00 P.M. instead of 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday nights. PYF meeting time for Sundays will remain at 5:00 P.M.

Handbell Practice Resumes

Handbell practice will resume each Wednesday evening at 6:00 P.M., beginning September 5th.

New Printer for Church Office

'Thank you' to an anonymous donor who personally financed the purchase of a new printer for the church office. The old one had been faithful for many years, but it finally stopped working recently.

The new laser jet printer is faster, much more efficient and very much appreciated!

Congregational Care in Extreme Heat

In the midst of this large and intense heat wave, congregations can make a significant difference in identifying and protecting people who are most vulnerable to heat related emergencies. Excessive heat (temperatures ranging 10 or more degrees above the typical seasonal high), are dangerous. During an average summer more than 100 people die each week from heat events. In Chicago, during a single week in 1995, the lives of over 700 people, most of whom were over age 65, in were lost.

People at risk for heat emergencies include:

*Those who have chronic respiratory or cardiovascular conditions ;

*Those who are frail elderly living alone or young children

*Those who work outside or in situations without air conditioning, or live in homes without air conditioning

*People in densely populated urban areas (the heat is trapped by cement and buildings)

*People who are overweight and obese

*People on fixed incomes who might feel as though they cannot afford expensive air cooling

*People who take certain medications, such as those treating depression, insomnia, or poor circulation

*Athletes and others who exert themselves outside during the hottest portions of the day are all at risk when temperatures and heat indices reach and exceed 100 degrees

Pets, too are at risk in weather excessively warm weather and should be kept inside if possible or at least provided with shade and constant cool water.

Interim Pastor Update

It has been several weeks since we have given everyone a status report. Two weeks ago we posted our CIF (Church Information Form) on the Presbyterian USA web site. As a result we have had 3 direct applications and 19 matched referrals, a total of 22 potential candidates. A note of interest is that there were a mix of males and females, as well as an experience-spread from young pastors with little experience to more senior pastors with many years of experience.

The Search Committee then reviewed all of the applications looking for the best matches to our congregation. We ended up with the top 6 candidates to pursue. These top 6 were sent a letter stating, “we have prayerfully narrowed our search to include your application.” Special note: Dr. Greg Goodwiller was impressed with our letter and asked to share it with interim committees.

We asked them to review our church web site, CIF form on-line, and consider exploring a potential relationship with our church. Everyone was given until August 17 to respond before we move to our next step.

They were told “our next step will be to review those candidates who express an interest in our Interim Pastor position.” At that point we will begin a more in-depth evaluation of the candidates, which will potentially include phone interviews, reference checks, as well as a sermon on tape.

Currently, we have had 2 of the 6 respond, stating they were interested in the interim position. They both mentioned they would be ending their current interim pastorate at the beginning of September. Over the next several days the committee will be meeting and starting the interview process.

Rev. John Taylor, Guest Speaker 8/19/07

Rev. Samuel Johnson Taylor (John) is pastor of Sumner Presbyterian Church. A native of Raleigh, North Carolina, John received a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies from Elon College, attended Candler School of Theology at Emory University, and earned his Master of Divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary. He previously served as Associate Pastor of 1st Presbyterian Church, Hernando, although, he is probably recognized more around the Presbytery of St. Andrew for his exploits as Moderator of the Tapestry Task Force (2004-06).

We welcome Rev. Taylor to the pulpit this Sunday, August 19th as he delivers the message at both worship services.

PW Conference Report

Ruth Kelly and Billie Garner recently attended the Alabama/Mississippi Presbyterian Women's Conference at Belhaven College in Jackson, MS. We give thanks for this opportunity.

Highlighting the gathering was the overview of the PW Bible Study for 2007-2008, entitled "Above and Beyond: Hearing God's Call in Jonah and Ruth." This study was presented in four sessions by Rev. Janice Catron of Louisville, Kentucky.

Melinda Hatcher of Hernando, MS made a presentation on Camp Hopewell's 'Christians Living With Cancer' Family Camp. Proceeds from the Market Place (gift shop) which totaled $2,775.65 will be given to this cause. Thank you to all our ladies who provided gift items for the Market Place.

Tony Franks was back again as the conference music leader. He conducted the morning and evening singing sessions, which were filled with enthusiasm and an up-lifting spirit.

Two cents a meal was collected at each meal; those proceeds, totaling $67.11, will be sent to our Synod's "Living Water for the World" project.

This conference was a time of learning and growing in faith, visiting with old friends, making new friends and becoming better informed about the work and mission of Presbyterian Women. We wish that every Presbyterian woman in our church could participate in such an interesting and inspiring event.

Night Circle Gets Underway

The Night Circle is looking forward to an inspirational and rewarding 2007-2008 year. We will be reading and discussing the book A Gentle Thunder by Max Lucado.

It is important for us to remember that God is the pilot and we are the passengers. Though we may not understand His hand, we can always trust His heart. We can trust Him to do what is right.

If you want a reminder of His love, an assurance of His strength, an example of His kindness, we encourage you to join us for Night Circle and the reading and sharing of A Gentle Thunder.

We plan to meet the third Tuesday of each month from 6:00 - 7:30 P.M. in the Session room of the church. An introductory meeting will be held August 21st, and out discussion groups will begin September 17th.

Centering Prayer Road Trip 8/4

Members of our newly-formed Centering Prayer group will travel to Holy Communion Episcopal Church in Memphis On Saturday, August 4th for a morning of prayer.

If you are interested in finding out about this kind of prayer, an informative session will begin at 9:00 a.m. The morning will consist of prayer with coffee breaks in between sessions. We should finish around noon.

Interim Pastor Search Continues

As a follow up from last week’s newsletter, the committee wants to share with everyone the list of desired skills and characteristics that were listed in the submitted forms. As part the process we assessed “Where we are today as a congregation? and Where we are going?” The Mission Statement grounds us in our purpose and values, while the current statistics of growth, demographics, and current fellowship represent the pulse of a healthy congregation. With this information, the committee developed the following list as benchmarks for our evaluation of a good fit Interim Pastor.

· Ability to serve the congregation in a very enthusiastic and energetic manner.

· Display a level of maturity that is suited and well matched with the congregation and helps maintain a positive and healthy attitude.

· Ability to interact with the young adults in the church ensuring they remain active and engaged.

· Ability to retain and attract new church members through involvement, fellowship, and spiritual development.

· Ability to help the church facilitate the planning and renovation of the existing church facilities with the eye on the long term building plans.

· Ability to minister to the sick and shut in within the congregation and extended church family in their time of spiritual need.

This list demonstrates some of the more important characteristic and desired skills we are looking for in our next Interim Pastor. The committee welcomes everyone’s feedback and comments. Additional updates and communications will come as we move through the search process. Please continue to be in prayer for the committee as we work diligently in our search for the best matched Interim Pastor.

Interim Pastor Search Committee

The Interim Committee is off and running. We have met several times in the past 2 weeks and used email daily to keep everyone informed, as well as keeping the process moving expeditiously.

One of the key things accomplished has been a revisit to our mission statement:

Batesville Presbyterian Church is called to be a faithful and all inclusive congregation that enthusiastically glorifies God in our worship, education, nurture, and service through the love and grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.

In addition, we have filled out the required Church Information Forms (CIF) Part 1 and Part 2. The primary sections required for the interim include information such as the roles and responsibilities, desired skills and competencies, and our mission statement. The Session has reviewed and approved these forms.

What are our next steps?

• We need to submit these forms CIF 1-2 to the Presbytery.
• Presbytery Executive will match candidates with our desires.
• Committee will review applications and interview best fit candidates· Administration Committee will negotiate a contract (usually a 6 month with renewable terms and 30 days out clause)
• Call a Congregational meeting to approve the calling of an Interim Pastor.

Next week we will review in greater detail the desired skills and competencies the committee will be using as a guide. Please continue to be in pray for the committee as we search for the best matched Interim Pastor.

Marvelous Monday Concludes 7/30

On Monday, July 30th from 10:00 A.M. - 12:00 noon, the children are invited to a swimming party at the home of Adam and Mona Pittman at 115 Redbud Drive. Snacks will be provided. Meg Woods is in charge. This will conclude Marvelous Monday for the year. A lifeguard will be on duty. All children 6 and under must be accompanied by a parent, other adult or a babysitter. In the event of rain, the activity will be cancelled.

PYF News

On Sunday July 28, PYF will be meet at the church immediately following the 11:00 worship service and have lunch at Café Ole. We will be back around 2:00 P.M. PYF will not meet again that evening.

On Sunday, August 4, at 6:00 P.M., PYF will gather at the church and ‘head out’ to the home of Mrs. Susie VanDyke for an outdoor "Back to School" cookout.

Birth Announcement

Congratulations to Reggie and Jennifer Myers Garner on the birth of their new son, Greer Roberts Garner. He was born on July 13th in Memphis and weighed 7 pounds, 5 ounces and was 20 inches long. He is welcomed by David and Teresa Myers, the very proud grandparents.

Presbyterian Women's Annual Report 2006/2007

We have completed another year of the Presbyterian Women's calendar. It has been a great year that began in September, 2006.

Our first notice for donations to pay for study material and other needed items brought good results of $383.00

In October, we sent "treats" to our college students. A special thanks to Dot Smith and her committee for coordinating this event.

Our Harvest Dinner in November was a huge success, thanks to Susanne Van Dyke and the Evening Circle.

In December, we had our joint meeting. It was a well-attended, lovely luncheon. Our thanks to Valerie Campbell and Bess Darby and their committee for a job well done. Also in December, Margaret Nix and her committee handled the "Joy Gift" program. We received $182 in donations and it was a great program. In addition, during December, we sponsored the "Shoebox Christmas" boxes. Susanne and the Evening Circle did a great job organizing this ministry once again.

January and February were very light months; poor weather caused some problems with meetings. But in March, we were hostesses for the community-wide "World Day of Prayer" service. Billie Breedlove and her committee did their usual stellar job.

Next, in April, we sponsored a brunch for our three high school graduates at the home of Briggs and Dot Smith. Our thanks to Dot and her committee for their efforts in this delightful brunch.

Finally, in June, after being postponed several times, we had our annual Birthday Celebration. We offer our thanks to Sarah Dell Gray and her committee for an excellent job organizing that event. We presented a Life Membership in PW USA to Margie Lightsey.

Now we have a new year to look forward to. We must all do our part if we are to keep the flames burning in our church and our community. Our new year will begin soon. The Presbyterian Women's Fall Cluster meeting will take place on August 11th, 2007 at the First Presbyterian Church in Oxford at 9:00 A.M. I hope to see you there! God bless each of you.

Youth News by Zack Hardy

First of all, I would like to thank the church, and all who made it possible, in helping the PYF go to Montreat. We had a great time in the beautiful mountains of Montreat, NC. The youth made my first experience at Montreat a wonderfully memorable one.

We had a great keynote speaker, Scott Phillips, in the mornings; there was a talented music leader, Colby Logan; and we enjoyed the enthusiastic, encouraging pastor, Rodger Nishioka in the evening worship services. The theme for the week was “turning the page,” and it focused on the fact that our lives are stories, and that we must listen to others’ stories, as well as share ours. Our back home group times at night allowed us to open up and to hear and share feedback among each other about our day. It was, and is, a blessing to see God working in each of the youth in different ways.

We also had a great white water rafting adventure (another first time for me) that went very well, thanks to the cooperation of the youth and the trained river guides. We had a fun, exciting time, and no one was hurt, and that's always a good thing. It was a great time to escape the busy life, away from distractions, and spend time in a place of "rest" and hear from God.

I will leave you with something to think about that pastor Rodger shared. “…too many times I think that people miss the big picture when they look at this young generation and say ‘you are the church of tomorrow.’ Yes, you are that, but you are also the church of today!” See, I truly believe that the youth are not merely the future, but they are also the present. I thank God and this church for this opportunity to be a part of their lives on this spiritual journey.

Dear church family and friends of the church,

Thank you for the lovely reception last Sunday in honor of my family and me. As I looked around the room at the familiar faces of the large crowd of gathered folks, I thought to myself, "Wow, the stories I could tell." I especially appreciate the effort put into organizing the reception by Billie Garner, Claire Sanders and Mary Tom Vance.

The love offering you gave us was an incredible display of your affection and respect for the work we have done in your midst. That money will be well spent in setting up our house in Houston. Thank you for this last display of your generosity to us which has been so evident to us from the day when we arrived here 8 years ago.

We will be in Houston on Wednesday and Thursday looking for a house. Then I will be away at a centering prayer retreat north of New Orleans from July 20-27. After that, we will be back in Batesville preparing for the move to Houston. I will begin work at St. John's on August 15.

Please keep us in your prayers as we make the move to Houston, as I begin a new ministry, and as the kids start school there. We already know they will be in an excellent public school located 5 minutes from the church.

Congratulations to Jim and Libby Monteith Minor of Birmingham on the birth of their son, John Alexander Minor. He was born on July 12 and weighed 7 pounds, 7 ounces. Welcoming John Alexander are his grandparents, Dick and Laurie Monteith and his great-grandmother, Mrs. Celeste Monteith.

Invitation to Celebration

Dear church family and friends of the church,

I hope you will come to worship this Sunday if you are able. I would like for us to celebrate the completion of our 8 years of ministry together. Our time together has been rich and fruitful. The church has literally been transformed during this time.

The majority of the membership is now under 50 years of age. We have strong programs for children and youth. Many young adults have joined the church, and the nurseries are full. For the past couple of years the membership has increased by 5% each year.

The congregation has acquired two properties adjacent to the main church building, so that we are no longer land locked. The Endowment and Trusts Committee has expanded our college scholarship program.

I contributed to the Presbytery by creating Tapestry, an annual training event that organizes 30 classes and has trained several hundred leaders in the presbytery.

I enjoyed working with the Black Jack and Independence Churches. We used a grant from Presbyterian Disaster Assistance as leverage to secure funds from the state which led to the installation of several storm shelters around the county.

I have enjoyed working with the church staff. Susanne Spencer VanDyke is the only church staff member who was serving when I came here and who will still be serving when I leave. Especially, I applaud her. The choir has been outstanding throughout my tenure.

One of the first things I did when I began here was to start a weekly church newsletter. In the past few years I expanded on the church newsletter by starting a blog and an email newsletter. Communication has significantly increased and giving is up as well.

One of the things I am most excited about is the new centering prayer group. I hope it will continue and grow. This spiritual practice has transformed my life. I challenge you to explore the power of an intimate relationship with God through centering prayer.

Thank you for the privilege of serving as your pastor. It has been a richly rewarding experience for me. I am truly grateful to you for letting me into your lives.

Interim Pastor Search Committee

During their meeting on July 8, 2007, the Session appointed the following Elders to the Interim Pastor Search Committee: Bill Mundroff (Moderator), Laurie Monteith, and Paulette Norman. They will work with our Presbytery Executive, Dr. Greg Goodwiller, to quickly find an Interim Pastor to serve the church.

Reception Honoring Burnham Family

The Batesville Presbyterian Church family will honor the Jon Burnham family with a reception to be held Sunday, July 15^th at 10:15 a.m. in the recreation room at the church. Christian Sympathy

Our Christian sympathy is with the family of Cooper Lewis upon the death of his mother on July 8, 2007. Visitation is on Tuesday, July 10, from 5:00 - 7:00 P.M. at Dickins Funeral Home. The funeral service will be on Wednesday, July 11, at 11:00 A.M. at First Presbyterian Church of Sardis.

Congregational Meeting

The Session has called a congregational meeting during the 11:00 A.M. worship service on Sunday, July 15, 2007, for the purpose of dissolving the pastoral relationship between Dr. Jon Burnham and Batesville Presbyterian Church effective August 15, 2007. Dr. Burnham will make arrangements for worship and pastoral care while on vacation from July 15 through August 15. The worship services on July 15 will be Dr. Burnham's last ones in the pulpit as pastor of this church.
